This week’s solid voter approval for Payson Unified School District to join Northern Arizona Vocational Institute of Technology is a win for our students, our schools, our citizens and our community. Our membership in NAVIT will allow Payson High School and Payson Center for Success students to acquire significant vocational skills in more career fields than we could offer through our high school programs alone. In partnership with our community college provider, both students and citizens will benefit. Ultimately, our community will reap the rewards of a well-trained work force ready to meet 21st century challenges.
The Payson Schools Governing Board and I particularly want to recognize and thank Dr. Barbara Ganz, provost of Gila County Community College Programs, and Mr. Scott Flake, director of the Payson Economic Development Corporation, for their local leadership in promoting the Joint Vocational District question; all the members of the Joint Vocational District Committee; Mr. Chester Crandall and Mr. Matt Weber of NAVIT for their generous time and talent in explaining the Joint Vocational District issue to every club, meeting, gathering and group in Payson; all those who wrote letters to the editor of the Payson Roundup in support of the Joint Vocational District; Jim Keyworth, Payson Roundup reporter, for his balanced coverage of this issue; and the citizens who shared our vision for our students and community by voting yes.
You trust us with your children every day and every day we try to do our best by them. Your affirmative vote gives us a tremendous opportunity to provide more students with more educational options. Their future is brighter today thanks to you.
Herb Weissenfels, Superintendent, Payson Unified School District No. 10
