Rim Runners Turn In Strong State Effort

The Arizona Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association has posted the official results of the Class 3A competition and both Longhorn teams fared well.

At the cross country championships Nov. 9 at Anthem, the Lady Longhorns posted a total time of 1:51.07 to finish 10th in the 3A conference. The boys total of 1:28.20 earned the Longhorns a fifth-place finish. The scores are compiled on each team’s top five runners.

For the Lady Horns, the fastest five were Rachelle Jones (23rd; 20:32.54), Alesha Huddlestun (39th; 21:28.03), Autumn Herrera (46th, 21:50.57), Ashli Herrera (69th, 22:49.58) and Becca Easton (85th, 24:26.86). A field of 108 runners competed in the run.

Among the Lady Horn contingent, the real surprise was Huddlestun’s performance. Only a freshman, she began the year as a relative unknown. As the season wore on, she improved enough to become the team’s No. 2 runner.

“She is learning how to compete,” coach Chuck Hardt said.

The top five PHS boys runners were Dustin Rogers (17th, 17:07.77), Tanner Morgan (18th, 17:08.03), Joe Behrens (21st, 17:22.72), Brian Langeliers (23rd, 17:23.73) and Daniel Jacobs (73rd; 19:17.77).

A field of 110 athletes competed in the boys run.

With the regular season over, state coaches will gather in early December to select participants in the Arizona Coaches Association All-Star cross country run to be held next summer in Casa Grande. Since only seniors are eligible for the celestial jaunt, Payson’s only nominee will be Rachelle Jones.
