Coaches Tap Four Horns All-State

Thanks to their stellar performances in the Longhorns’ run to the state boys soccer co-championship, a foursome of Payson High players has been named to the All-State Tournament team.

Mark Hillegas, Andrew Karlowski, Travis Sanders and Ryan Peters were tapped to the celestial squad at the conclusion of the state championship game against Sedona. That clash ended in a 0-0 tie after two overtimes.

Hillegas, the Longhorns’ standout goalie, allowed only one goal in postseason play. His .68 goals per game average for the 2002 season was one of the best marks in the conference.

Karlowski, a defensive sweeper, scored three goals and had two assists in the tournament that was played at Udall Park in Tucson.

Playing midfield, Sanders was the Horns’ leading scorer this year. His 26 goals and 11 assists helped earn him Player of the Year honors in the Rim region.

Peters, a forward, finished the campaign with eight goals and three assists. By scoring three goals in the postseason, he was Payson’s leading scorer in the playoffs.
