The Longhorn cross country team will not be traveling to Snowflake today (Friday, Oct. 4) as originally scheduled. Instead, coach Chuck Hardt will be taking his charges north to Winslow where the Bulldog Invitational is being contested.
Because the Snowflake meet was canceled for unknown reasons, Hardt was forced to scurry about the state looking for a replacement meet.
At Winslow, the Horns will hook up with many of the teams and athletes they faced at last weekend's Blue Ridge Invitational in Lakeside.
Host Winslow, which won the Lakeside meet, will be among the favorites to win the Bulldog title.
Winslow tallied a meet-low 57 points at Blue Ridge. Alchesay (66), Payson (83) and Mingus (106) trailed in the 10-team field.
Although the Horns had to settle for a third-place showing, Hardt said his team was improving.
Payson's best effort was turned in by Joe Behrens, who finished fourth in 17:48. Winslow's Joe Thomas won the run in 17:19.
Because the top-25 finishers received medals, Payson's Tanner Morgan (fifth, 17:55), Dustin Rodgers (eighth, 18:04) and Brian Langeliers (16th, 19:02) now have more adornments for their lettermen's jackets.
Also representing Payson were Tommy Ashby (51st, 21:45), Steve Colbertson (53rd, 21:50) and Josh Sprinkle (22:16).
Following the team's return to Payson, the coach praised Ashby. "He's learning how to compete," Hardt said.
In the junior varsity competition, Payson High entered three fledgling runners. Paul Welch was 21st (23:25) and Jonny Malloy finished 25th (23:43). In 28th place was Kevin Murphy (25:25).
The winning jayvee time, turned in by a Winslow runner, was 19:08.
