When Sgt. Doug Johnson died from a blocked coronary artery Aug. 1, his greatest dream for his children came close to dying too.
Johnson and his wife, Teresa, have four children, Jessica, Cody, Dillan and Sara. Their dream was to send each of these children to college.
But because Johnson was not on duty when he died, there is no provision in the department's benefits for the children's education.
The families of Teresa and Doug Johnson, and the members of the Payson Police Department are determined to make that dream come true.
Johnson was a respected 11-year veteran of the department and a dedicated servant of the community. As a D.A.R.E. officer, he was committed to keeping drugs out of Payson's schools and was also a member of the Special Enforcement Unit.
The Payson Police Department is hosting a fund-raiser to establish education accounts for the children.
Sponsorships for the Doug Johnson Memorial Education Fund are available for a variety of donation levels. Other contributions, in any amount, are also encouraged.
The deadline to become a sponsor or make a contribution is Nov. 1. A dinner and silent auction celebrating Johnson's life is at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 10 at the Chaparral Pines Clubhouse. Dinner tickets are $50 each, the raffle tickets, for a chance at a week-long trip for two to Waikiki, are $10 each, or three for $25.
The sponsorships available are:
Community College Sponsorship, $250 to $499 donation, includes choice of two dinner tickets or 12 raffle tickets; recognition on the Doug Johnson Memorial website, and a link to your website; name listed in the Benefit Program; name listed in the newspaper; and video credit.
University Sponsorship, $500 to $999 donation, includes the same choices and benefits as the Community College Sponsorship, plus a toast to you or your company at the dinner.
Ivy League Sponsorship, $1,000 donation or more, includes the same choices and benefits of the Community College and University Sponsorships, plus a table at the event will be dedicated to you or your business.
Tickets to the dinner are limited and will be distributed on a first come basis. When they are gone, those interested can still purchase 12 raffle tickets in lieu of dinner tickets.
