All-Indian Event Draws Rodeo's Top Athletes

Last weekend's edition of the Tonto Apache Champion of Champions All-Indian Rodeo didn't give anyone a bum steer as far as slam-bang rodeo-action fans were concerned.

It was just the box-office take at the Payson Event Center that wasn't too bullish.

"We were a little disappointed at the turnout," said Jerry Holland, controller for the Tonto Apache Tribe. "We don't have an actual head count yet, but I can say we didn't quite get what we expected, even though it was such a beautiful day. I don't know if everyone is rodeoed out, what with the Spring Rodeo, the August Doin's and this one. But it was a small crowd."

The rodeo itself, however, offered action-packed performances, Holland said.

"Everyone involved in it and everyone who was watching had a great time," he said.
