The Copper State Jam youth basketball tournament has added a new wrinkle.
An "On the Rim Fall Classic" tournament will be played for the first time this year.
The Jam tournament, which has become one of the most popular youth sports events in Arizona, will continue to be contested each January.
On the Rim tournament games will be played Oct.. 19 and 20 in the Tonto Apache gymnasium. Players who participate must be 14 years old and under. Age is determined as of Oct. 1.
According to tournament chairman and Copper State Jam founder Steve Rensch, the Fall Classic will feature eight youth teams from around the state.
The Jam, which has a large school, small school and girls division, usually hosts 50-plus teams some from out of state.
In the Fall Classic, each team will be guaranteed at least four games. Teams will compete in pool play the first day and a championship bracket the second.
Games are played in 14 minute halves with a stopped clock.
Payson will be represented in the tournament by the Panthers youth team coached by Rory Huff. Most of the players on the team are eighth-grade students at Rim Country Middle School.
