Korth, Szakal Win Low Net Match

The links team of Frank Szakal and Rick Korth will represent the Payson Men's Golf Association at the Arizona state two-man tournament next month in Phoenix.

The team earned the right to advance to state by winning the PMGA's low net, by flight tournament Aug. 28 at Payson Golf Course.

Competing in the first flight, the winning duo carded a net tally of 60.8 to edge out the runner-up team of Jack Greenshield and Harry Sogan (62.4).

However, the battle was a tightly contested affair in which the champions of the first three flights had to go into putt-off to determine the eventual winners.

On the 23rd hole of the putt-off, Korth sunk about a 25-foot putt to win the Payson title.

According to Korth, both he and Szakal will travel to Phoenix for the state meet.

In the battle of the PMGA's second flight, Tim Ernst and Victor Kostecki finished as champions with a 68.6. Frank Karnes and Hugh Templeton were second with a 69.4.

LeRoy Robinson and Tom Fox teamed up for a 74.6 that earned them third flight gold. Jim Furimsky and Morris Kropf were second, with a 74.8.

Closest-to-the-pin prize money on No. 8 was pocketed by Bud Drummond who left his tee shot just 3 feet, 10 inches shy of the flag.

Other winners included John Peel (No. 17; 9 feet, 1 inch), Tony Mularski (No. 14; 8 feet, 5 inches), Jim Dalgleish (No. 4; 22 feet, 3 inches) and Karnes (No. 2; 8 feet, 2 inches).

The members of the PMGA return to action tomorrow (Wednesday) when they travel to the White Mountains for an interclub meet against Show Low.
