Pirch, Randall Team Up To Catch First Place In Bass Championship

Clifford Pirch and Reese Randall teamed up to win the top cash prize of $2,000 in the AllStar Bass Summer Nights Team Championship Aug. 24 and 25 at Apache Lake.

The pair, who have been friends since both were students at Payson High School, weighed in a six-fish limit of 20.08 pounds. The largest fish in their catch was a 5.35-pounder.

In winning the tournament, the pair used Yamamoto buzzbaits and plastic worms. The duo's fishing strategy was to scour the lake looking for hot spots.

"We fished (off) points all around the lake, no particular spot" Pirch said.

When not tournament fishing, Pirch is a licensed outdoor guide and a Payson Roundup columnist.

In second place behind Pirch and Randall was Rick Grumbie of Glendale and Allen Van Loo of Phoenix. The two weighed in 18.60 pounds of fish that included at 5.43-pounder.

According to AllStar officials, the silver medalists fished drop-shot worms and crankbaits on flats adjacent to drop-offs in area above and below the marina. For their finish, the two pocketed $1,250.

In third place with 18.22 pounds was the Gilbert team of Frank Buessing and Reggie Frieswyk. The pair also had the event's big fish winner an 8.21 pound largemouth.

Another eight-pounder was caught by Apache Junction anglers Curtis Palmer and LeRoy Moss.
