Arizona Interscholastic Association regulations prevent official scores from being kept at pre-season scrimmages in all prep sports.
But that doesn't mean there weren't spectators on hand Saturday afternoon in Eagar keeping track of the scores piled up in a scrimmage that pitted Monument Valley against Payson.
Playing in the Round Valley High School dome, the Longhorns ran roughshod over MV racking up seven touchdowns during the two-hour match.
Payson scored on the second play from scrimmage and had three touchdowns in the team's first 10 plays.
Monument Valley scored once, and that occurred when many of the Payson defensive reserves were on the field.
Coach Steve Saban returned to Payson from the mock game saying the outing was well worth the almost-three hour trip to Eagar.
"The scrimmage gave us a glimpse of what we need to work on," he said. "We had typical scrimmage mistakes and overall execution errors, but overall I was pleased with our performance."
Assistant Mike Loutzenheiser agreed.
"We played fairly well but have a lot to implement before St. Johns," he said.
The Longhorns open the regular season at 7 p.m. this evening in PHS stadium against St. Johns.
The players cited for exceptional performances were Mike Barr, Layton Howell, Klayton Haught, Waylon Pettet, Nate Acord, Jake Swartwood and Nate Perna.
