The Lady Longhorn volleyball team's season-opening loss to Higley did little to dampen the enthusiasm of junior setter Shea Hatch.
"This is just the starting point of the season. We'll be okay," she said.
In a first game 16-14 loss, the Lady Horns were down 14-4, but came roaring from behind to tie the score at 14-14.
"We came back, but were unable to finish it," coach Chris Schwind said.
In the second game, the Lady Horns dropped a 15-12 decision.
"We played real hard, but did not serve well," Schwind said.
Although the loss was disappointing to the coaches and players, junior outside hitter Staci Scholl found some bright spots in the Lady Horns overall play.
"We spread our hits around and did pretty well as a team," she said.
In a jayvee encounter that preceded the varsity match, Payson won the first game 15-3, lost the second 15-12, then won the rubber match 15-8.
On the freshman level, Payson lost 15-5 and 15-12 decisions.
The Lady Horns return to action at 6:30 p.m. (tomorrow) in Wilson Dome against the Winslow Bulldogs. The showdown will be preceded by a 4:30 p.m. freshmen game and a 5:30 p.m. jayvee encounter, also against Winslow.
