You hear people talk about culture from two perspectives in the Rim country.
Some say who needs it up here in a small western town built by people rounding up cows and cutting down trees.
Others say it's the one thing we need to become a well-rounded community.
This weekend at the Third Annual Rim Country Western Heritage Festival, cowboys and culture come together in an event that demonstrates how important the arts are in keeping our past alive.
As Sharesse von Strauss, director of the Northern Gila County Historical Society, puts it: "While our old Western lifestyle is unfortunately eroding, the essence of the culture is really taking off in the artistic spirit. Whether it's through a play, a painting, poetry or music, they're the ones who aren't going to let it die."
Check the schedule of events on page 2A of today's Payson Roundup and come on down to Green Valley Park this weekend and see for yourself.
