Rim country Special Olympian LeAnn Gillies swam her way to a pair of medals at the Phoenix Special Olympics held Sept. 6 and 7.

The 14-year-old Rim Country Middle School eighth-grader won the gold medal in the 25-meter breast stroke. In the 25-meter backstroke she was fourth. The medals were not her first in the swimming competition.

"Last year in Flagstaff, I won a bronze in freestyle and a silver in backstroke," Gillies said.

In addition to swimming competition, Gillies competes in ice skating.

In Payson, Gillies and her teammates are coached in both sports by Becky Derwort. Gillies says she plans a break from swimming to concentrate on ice skating for the Special Olympic Winter Games in Flagstaff later this season.
