Blinded by the setting sun, a motorist was involved in a rollover accident on westbound Highway 260 Saturday.
Rachel Merritt, 58, Payson, was westbound on Highway 260 at about 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 14. Near Chaparral Pines, she told police, the sun was in her eyes and she crossed to the south side of the road and went off the embankment, Lt. Don Engler of the Payson Police Department said.
She was initially thought to have only a sprained left arm, scrapes and bruises. At Payson Regional Medical Center, it was discovered she actually had massive internal injuries. She was air-lifted to a Phoenix hospital where she underwent surgery, Detective Brian Havey of the Gila County Sheriff's Department said.
Havey said the woman had a poor prognosis, but has since improved and is expected to recover.
The GCSO became involved in the case as the result of an unrelated investigation, Havey said.
