The Payson Women's Golf Association will host its annual club championship tournament Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. Most members agree that the tournament is one of the highlights of the association's season. Another much-anticipated event is the President's Cup tournament that was won this year by club member Wilma Smith.
PWGA members prepared for the club championships with a new, and unusual, formatted tournament played last week at Payson Golf Course.
According to PWGA member Alesha Calderwood, the "cross country" format had the players tallying their best scores on holes 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 17, 3 vs. 16 and on through the course's 18 holes.
After the best scores on the holes were tallied, one-half handicap was deducted.
Gerry Quissenberry and Blanch Nyberg were proclaimed champs.
Laura Meyocks and Smith took second.
In third, with a tally of 30, were Joyce Goff and Nancy Kissiberth.
Calderwood pocketed closest-to-the-pin prize money on No. 14 and Meyocks was closest on No. 8.
