Jesus (Joe) Guzman Alvarez, 83, of Payson, died Aug. 3, 2003. He was born Dec. 10, 1919 in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico.
Mr. Alvarez was a graduate of Arizona State University. He married Josephine Quesada Sept. 9, 1940 in Tempe.
He was a World War II Army veteran, Army Intelligence, in Central and South America.
In 1982, Mr. Alvarez retired from the Rand Corp. in Santa Monica, Calif., where he was a security detective.
The family moved to Arizona in 1982 following his retirement.
Mr. Alvarez was an active member of the Bassmasters, Kiwanis and St. Philip's Catholic Church, where he was a choir member. Mr. Alvarez had a beautiful voice, and he and Josephine were members of the Payson Choral Society during its first two years.
He was active in the community and was civic minded.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine; son, William F. Alvarez, Sr.; daughter-in-law, Louise Alvarez, all of Payson; brother, Joseph R. Alvarez of San Jose; sisters, Marcelina Rodriguez of Fresno, Calif. and Tillie M. Valencia of San Jose, Calif.; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, followed at 10 a.m. by a Memorial Mass, at St. Philip The Apostle Catholic Church, 511 St. Phillips St. in Payson.
A committal service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15 at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road in Phoenix.
