Junior Golf Program Awaits Town Approval

If John Pauley and Dave Herbert have their druthers, the youth golf program begun last summer by Payson High School coach Bret Morse will be offered throughout the year.

The two have proposed a junior golf program that would be held 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. each Thursday from Aug. 28 to Oct. 16.

Morse's summer program wrapped up in June.

Pauley and Herbert want the town of Payson Parks and Recreation Department to co-sponsor the program. If the town agrees, the founders would not have to overcome obstacles like insurance costs.

The proposed program would be open to aspiring players ages 8 to 18 years old.

The goal of the junior program, Pauley said, would be to "to help kids continue on in golf."

Herbert, now the greens superintendent at Payson Golf Course, is a former collegiate player.

Pauley, who is a retired public school teacher, was the Tempe High School golf coach for 25 years.

The curriculum of the program for beginners would include instruction in grip, posture, alignment and ball position. They'll teach the techniques of putting, chipping, pitching and longer shots. Basic etiquette, rules and course management also will be taught.

For the intermediate players, advanced techniques, game strategy, mental approach, nutrition and exercise will be stressed.

Pauley defines beginners as those who have played only a little golf or not at all.

The intermediate players are those who know basic etiquette and rules. They should also be able to demonstrate moderate proficiency in the fundamentals.

To fund the fledgling program, Pauley and Herbert have slated a raffle Sept. 18 at Payson Golf Course.

Prizes include rounds of golf at premium golf courses and gift certificates from local merchants. Thus far, 14 golf courses have donated rounds of play. Among them are The Rim Club, Chaparral Pines, Payson Golf Course, Sedona Golf Resort, Prescott Stone Ridge Canyon, Tempe Rolling Hills and Mesa Superstition Springs. Several local merchants, including Bashas', Country Kitchen, Cucina Paradiso and Macky's Grill, also have donated $25 gift certificates.

Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20.
