Arizona Cardinals NFL flag football is coming to the Rim country.
Registration for play in the youth league (ages 8 to 14 years), to be co-sponsored by the Town of Payson Parks and Recreation Department, is Sept. 1 to 19 at the Green Valley Park offices. The fee is $20 per player.
According to Parks and Rec coordinator Teddy Pettet, a 10-game schedule will kickoff the first week in October and wrap up in November. Pettet anticipates games will be played after school hours on weekdays.
Although the format for the new league is not yet finalized, Pettet anticipates youngsters will participate in age groups
"They could be 9-and-under, 11-and-under, 12-and-under and 14-and-under," he said. "But we'll have to wait and see how registration goes before we decide (the age groups)."
The younger ages division will participate in coed teams. The older divisions will play in a boys and girls format.
The rules of the game are similar to what youngsters participate in during school day physical education flag football competition.
Flag teams are made up of five players and the field size is reduced to 70x30 yards.
The Arizona Cardinals and the National Football League sponsor the inaugural program.
Arizona Cardinals Youth Football Coordinator Rich Tomey recently traveled to Payson to introduce the program to Pettet and the Parks and Rec department. Arizona football fans might know Tomey as the son of former University of Arizona Wildcat football coach Dick Tomey.
