A man driving south on Highway 87 lost control and went into a ravine about five miles north of Rye Monday morning.
Department of Public Safety Officer Vern Havens said the driver, Brian Vanleuven, 41, of Mesa, is currently in stable condition at Scottsdale Healthcare Hospital-Osborn.
"What it looks like is that he drifted off the left-hand side of the road and tried to correct right and overcorrected," Havens said. "Then he went all the way back across both traffic lanes, exited on the right, over-steered again and went all the way back across the road and basically rolled multiple times down the embankment."
Havens said Vanleuven was ejected from the car.
"He was transported to Scottsdale Osborne by Native Air Helicopter where he was admitted for fractures," Havens said. "He's somewhat stable, but it's too early to say. He's extremely lucky."
DPS is continuing its investigation. Havens said that alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
