Few Christmas gifts are capable of giving back like a pet from the Payson Humane Society.
But if you can't put a puppy, kitten, dog or cat under your Christmas tree this year, you can at least give Payson's unwanted pets a much-needed boost by contributing to the Payson Humane Society's annual holiday food and supply drive.
The drive, which the shelter relies on to feed the animals for most of the following year, begins Dec. 8 and continues through Dec. 31.
Special white dumpsters with black spots for dropping off pet food and other supplies are at Bashas', Safeway, and Payson Feed & Pet Supply. Donations also can be dropped off at the shelter, 812 S. McLane Road.
"We're looking for dog food, Purina or Pedigree in the yellow bag," Assistant Manager Ann Campbell said. "We're really low on puppy food, Purina or Pedigree, and we always need kitten food -- Kitten Chow."
While cat food supplies are not as low as other kinds of pet food, donations of Cat Chow also can be used.
Dry food is preferred to wet, Campbell said, and specified brands are preferred if donors have an option because consistency in the animals' diets results in fewer digestive problems.
Besides pet food, dog and cat treats are needed, as well as cleaning supplies like bleach and Pine Sol, blankets, dog and cat toys, towels, wash cloths, litter boxes and litter, leashes and collars, bowls, paper towels, and washable foam cat beds.
