Stuart and Helen Bates were married Dec. 15, 1942 in the chapel at Fort Scott in San Francisco, Calif.
The Bateses met on a blind date while Stuart was on a weekend pass from San Francisco and Helen was a service representative for the telephone company in Los Angeles.
Stuart had to return to duty in San Francisco two days later.
They corresponded and were married three months later.
The Bateses have a daughter, Susan Padgett of Phoenix, and a son, William of Las Vegas, Nevada. And they have three grandchildren, Carli and Everett Bates and Patricia Padgett.
Stuart and Helen resided in Payson for 24 years and were volunteers for the hospital auxiliary and the library.
