Benefit Fish Fry Highly Successful

The Payson High School boys and girls basketball teams hosted a highly successful benefit fish fry meal Dec. 17 in the Rim Country Middle School cafeteria.

All of the proceeds from the meal will be used to purchase much-needed items for the two teams. Without those funds, boys coach Mike Loutzenheiser and girls coach Rory Huff would not be able to conduct the quality programs they now have. The coaches say they are very grateful to those in the community who purchased tickets. They also wish to express a huge thank you to several sponsors who helped pick up the tab for the meal.

Those sponsors include Bashas', Safeway, McIntyre Construction, Wal-Mart, Phil White Ford, Payson Concrete, OAI Construction, the Payson Rodeo Committee, Kasson Homes, Beacon Custom Builders, Inc., Mogollon Designs, MJT Construction and Creek Homes.

It's free!

The really good news for local wrestling fans is there will be no admission charged for the Rim Country Duals tournament to be held today and tomorrow in Wilson dome.

Tournament director Don Heizer said admission charges are being waved because, "We want everyone to be able to come enjoy two days of great competition and entertainment."

Heizer also plans on not charging admission to the Tim Van Horn Memorial Tournament when it is held Jan. 23 and 24.

Action in the RC Duals begins at 1:30 p.m. today and will continue until about 8 p.m. this evening. Tomorrow, action gets under way at 9:30 a.m. and will wrap up about 4:30 p.m. with a mini-tournament that will seed the best individual wrestlers of the two days against one another.

Ten teams from around the state are slated to compete in the duals. Fans should keep their eyes on San Manuel and Gilbert Highland. San Manuel is a big favorite to win the Class 2A state championship. SM has most of its wrestlers back from last season's state runner-up team.

Highland is a perennial power in the 5A conference and always brings a fine team to Payson. Others slated to participate include Apache Junction, Phoenix Day School for the Deal, Ironwood, Pusch Ridge, Valley Christian, Phoenix Christian, Skyline and host Payson.

The tournament should be a good one. Turn out and show your support for our hard working young wrestlers.
