John and Fran Hoffman, residents of Payson for the past 21 years, are giving the community a little comfort with a new store called Bedrooms & More.
"We don't sell mattresses, we sell comfort," Fran said, referring to her inventory that includes traditional mattress, pillow tops and some made of a latex foam that conforms to the body.
Last November, John decided to retire and closed his company, H&A Trucking. Fran had been teaching computer classes at the community college. Both had often discussed opening a bedroom store.
"I used to haul most of the mattresses up here, so I knew the demand," John said.
Bedrooms & More opened for business Jan. 25, featuring an inventory of not just mattresses, but lamps, bedroom suites and other accessories.
"I try to get different furniture from the other stores in town, but we can also order things we don't have on the floor," Fran said.
"People here should have choices."
Bedrooms & More sells mattresses that range from around $300 to $2,700. The higher-end mattresses are made from new foam materials that have no springs and conform to the body without creating permanent indentations in the bed. Most all the mattresses have an anti-microbial element to help reduce allergies, and all of the mattresses come with warranties from 10 to 15 years.
Fran said that they soon will be carrying a mattress made of natural, non-toxic materials and a 100 percent cotton cover that is targeted to people with allergies and chemical sensitivities.
The Hoffmans hope their store will encourage people to spend money in Payson rather than going to the Valley with their dollars.
"Our prices are comparable to those in the Valley --ometimes even better," Fran said.
According to John, business has been good, in fact "better than expected," since the opening three weeks ago.
"We're a little off the beaten path, but people have found us," Fran said.
"People need to come and experience these new types of mattresses," Fran said. "Beds aren't what they used to be."
