Second-Place Lady Horns Set For Regionals


In her first year coaching the Lady Longhorn basketball program, Krystal Garvin has guided the team to an East region second-place finish and a berth in the regional and state tournaments.

A season-ending 59-52 victory over the Show Low Cougars Friday evening in Wilson Dome nailed down the runner-up showing for the Lady Horns.

Payson's second-place finish guarantees the team a firs-round bye into the regional tournament which begins today (Feb. 11). In the first round, the No. 6 visits No. 3 and No. 5 travels to No. 4.

The winners of those opening round games advance to the final four set Feb. 14 in Eagar/ Springerville. The survivor of the No. 6 vs. No 3 clash plays the Lady Horns at 1 p.m. Friday. The winner of the No. 5 vs. No. 4 showdown plays regular season champion Round Valley at 6 p.m. The winners of those semifinal games meet at 6 p.m. Feb. 15 for the tournament championship. The losers of the semifinals, meet at 2 p.m. for third-place honors.

All final four teams will advance to the state tournament slated to begin Feb. 18 at either a Flagstaff high school or on the campus of Northern Arizona University.

In Payson's win over Show Low, Ashli Herrera paved the way to the victory scoring a team-high 15 points.

The Lady Horns posted an early 16-14 lead and expanded it to 39-25 at halftime. Although the Cougars outscored Payson 27-20 in the second half, the margin Payson had built in the third quarter was enough to secure the victory.
