Joseph Robert Dinda, decorated veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars, died Jan. 8, 2003.
He was born to Michael Dinda and Anna Kantarik on Sept. 24, 1930 in Superior, Wis.
Mr. Dinda starred in football at Wichita University in Wichita, Kan., before receiving a commission in the U.S. Army in 1954 and marrying Connie Jean Barlow.
Highlights of his career include tracking protesters during the Washington, D.C. riots in the 1960s and commanding a military company in Germany.
After a distinguished career in which he attained the rank of Lt Colonel, Mr. Dinda retired in 1974 to focus on farming, gardening and raising his family. An accomplished storyteller, he authored a number of short stories and anecdotes.
Joe and Connie were Payson residents from 1997 to 2001.
The Dindas moved to Oregon in 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Connie; children, Paul, Anna, Thomas, Julia, Catherine, Patricia and Helen; 14 grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Jan. 11 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gervais.
Internment was at Willamette National Cemetery.
