For Payson seniors and people with disabilities, getting to the store or a medical appointment can be a challenge.
"Many people aren't aware of the transportation services available here," says Ron Ethington, full-time driver for AAA Transportation System, which provides 24-hour non-emergency medical transportation.
"Our service provides transportation seven days a week for those who need to go to dialysis or any kind of medical appointment," Ethington said, "and the service is covered by several different types of insurance such as AHCCCS and Mercy Care. We also pick up prescriptions for people. They need to call their insurance provider and they contact AAA Transportation System. They call me and I get the prescription."
While AAA Transportation System covers non-emergency medical transport, the Payson Senior Center provides low-cost transportation for other things, such as grocery shopping.
According to volunteer Nadine Lawson, the Senior Center provides transportation between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday through Friday.
"It's best to call the center at least the day before you need transportation so we can schedule you in," Lawson said.
The center charges $3 for a round trip with one stop within Payson and $6 from Star Valley. The price goes up $1 per stop.
If the person needing transport uses a wheelchair, there is an additional $2 charge. There are also additional charges for any caretakers who accompany the person.
High Country Transportation also provides a local taxi service Sunday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. High Country charges an initial $3 pick-up charge and $1.75 per mile. They also have a shuttle service to Sky Harbor Airport at a cost of $40.
