Mattress Store Evolves To Full-Fledged Furniture Store

BedRooms and More, the Furniture Store started life at the end of January as just a mattress store.

Then owners Fran and John Hoffman put beds under the mattresses. Accent pieces and full bedroom suites followed, then came dining room furniture, lamps, and chairs.

John and Fran Hoffman invite their customers to browse through the bigger, better BedRooms and More furniture store at the corner of Longhorn Road and Tonto. After only six months in business, the Hoffmans have expanded their store and are now carrying a larger selection of bedroom, living room and dining room furniture.

Now, after only six months in business, the original 3,000-square-foot showroom is expanding into adjacent space to create 11,000 square feet of display room for living and dining rooms, Frigidaire appliances and Zenith televisions.

The most well-known names the Hoffmans are stocking are Ashley, Lane and Spring Air Mattresses, in addition to the new appliance and television lines they are brining into the store.

The Hoffmans have lived in Payson for more than 20 years, owning and operating H&A Trucking and Moving until November 2002.

"John wanted to get out of the truck, but he hadn't work for anyone else for a long time," Fran said.

One day John helped move some mattresses and he came home and told Fran they should sell mattresses. Fran went along with the plan and the business took off.

She said they had been talking about getting into a different business for about seven years. Nothing they looked at seemed to be the right fit.

"I like working with the people. They're all different," Fran said. "I've always liked furniture and decorating. John wants me to start going into customers' homes to help them with their decorating, but I don't know where I'd find the time. But I like helping people find what they need."

To get an idea of Fran's decorating talents, a customer only needs to look around the store. She picked the paint and carpeting and oversees setting up the display rooms, something may of her customers have complimented.

Most of the Ashley pieces have already arrived for the expansion, she said. Next week, the Hoffmans expect to have the appliances on hand, with the Lane furniture coming into the store next month.

Fran said the turnaround time from their suppliers is pretty good. The wait on Ashley is usually no more than two weeks. When Lane is in place, the wait will be a little longer since most of its pieces are custom made.

BedRooms and More, the Furniture Store has free delivery and furniture set up, Fran said, and they will take away the customer's old mattresses, if necessary.

Located at 100 North Tonto Street, just north of Longhorn Road, the store is a little off the beaten path, but Fran isn't concerned.

With the business expanding, the Hoffmans also said adding to their payroll. They started with three taking care of everything, now six are employed.

"We want to give people the service they want," she said. "Some just come in to browse, so we won't be following them around the place, but there will be someone to welcome them."

She said they will try to keep prices reasonable and are stocking different price ranges too. Financing is available as well.

Customers don't have to wait for any special event before they can start shopping the new inventory. The carpet in the added space is finished, and if a piece has a price tag on it, a customer can buy it, Fran said.

BedRooms and More, the Furniture Store is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday. Call 472-3320 for more information.
