Town Salaries: How Well Does Payson Pay?

As the town's budget nears preliminary approval by the council, it appears that town employees will get their 3-percent merit raise, but for the third year in a row, no market raise.

In a lean financial year, the town has escaped having to lay off employees. Yet from 2002 statistics from a market study done by the town, Payson remains below market pay in many positions.

The study compared median salary ranges of the same positions to other towns of similar size and character.

The accompanying chart shows the current salary range of selected town jobs. The percent market difference shows how the median salary in Payson compares to the median salaries in similar towns.

A variable that was absent in the study was cost of living, which is higher in Payson than most of the other towns in the study.

The town council is scheduled to vote on the tentative 2003-2004 budget at its July 10 meeting.

Upon approval, the budget cannot be increased. A special meeting to approve the final budget is schedule for Aug. 7.
