A Payson man was killed in a motorcycle accident this weekend.
Charles E. Price, 43, had taken his nephew, Mark DeBottis' new motorcycle for a ride on Houston Mesa Road Saturday evening. He was not wearing a helmet when he crashed at the curve by the corrals, according to a report from the Gila County Sheriff's Department.
The accident was about a half-mile north of Mesa del Caballo, Saturday, July 12.
Price was in critical condition and transported by air to Maricopa County Medical Center. He died at 10:25 p.m. from head injuries.
"He had a big heart. He was taking care of his nephews -- like a father," DeBottis said.
Motorcycles were his passion when he was younger, DeBottis said.
"Everything about him was special," niece Priscilla Greenwade said. She said the family was having some tough times and that is why Price had his nephews, DeBottis and Chad Lofquist.
"He just took them in and made them part of his life," she said. "... He loved being around his family."
Speed was a factor in the accident, according to the sheriff's report, and the matter is still being investigated.
