Preseason Football Camp Slated To Start July 28


Under first-year coach Jerry Rhoades, the 2003 Payson High School football campaign will kickoff at a preseason camp July 28 and continue each weekday until Aug. 1.

Training sessions are from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the Rumsey Park south field. Weight training sessions will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 5 p.m.

There is no fee for the camp and Rhoades is urging prospective players to participate.

Preseason training resumes at 3:30 p.m., Aug. 4. All athletes must have their physical and insurance forms on file in the office of athletic director Dave Bradley before they will be allowed to practice.

The Longhorns spring into action a week earlier than other fall sports at PHS. The team travels to Snowflake Aug. 22 for its annual preseason scrimmage. Kickoff is 7 p.m. Under Arizona Interscholastic Association rules, no score can be kept and the game statistics are not counted in final tabulations.

The campaign officially begins at 7 p.m. Aug. 29 on PHS field against the Cortez Colts.

Hardt issues invite

Payson High School cross country coach Chuck Hardt is urging all students interested in participating in the sport to turn out for the team when practices begin at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 11.

A team meeting will be held at 6 a.m. July 21 in Rumsey Park. Hardt will be available at the meeting to answer any questions prospective team members have about the sport.

Soccer on tap

The Yavapai College Soccer Camp will return to Payson July 21 for a four-day camp.

Set to head the camp is Yavapai coach Hugh Bell who has helped lead the Roughriders to three National Junior College Athletic Association championships.

The camp, which is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both Rumsey Park multipurpose fields, is open to high-school-age boys and girls. The camp curriculum will include technical, tactical and functional training in all of the soccer skills.

Each camper should bring to the sessions shin guards, water bottle, soccer shoes, sunscreen, and suitable soccer apparel.

The registration fee of $120 includes instruction, liability insurance coverage, camp shirt, soccer ball and souvenirs.

The deadline for registration is July 15. Registration forms are available at the Parks and Recreation Department at Green Valley Park.
