Gila Community College is set to begin its second year of operation. After a major reorganization during 2002, a number of new and exciting innovations and procedures are about to take place.
In a few weeks, the college will begin to offer credit courses over cable television. Following an agreement with Cablevision of Payson, Channel 62 has been assigned as the home of Gila Community College. Besides courses, the channel will be used to inform the public about activities at the Payson campus and also allow students to use the channel to receive credit and develop career skills necessary for broadcasting.
Also beginning this fall, an agreement was reached with an online bookstore and that bookstore has been designated as the College's "official bookstore." Students can visit the bookstore website, find out what book is being used for a course, the edition being used, and purchase their books at a reasonable price online.
The college now has an official governing board that is responsive to the taxpayers and students of Gila County. They already have been hard at work at building the college.
In the last election, voters approved the Northern Arizona Vocational Institute of Technology. This allows the College to begin to offer classes in Certified Nursing Assistant and Fire Science to high school-age students. These classes also are open to the public.
The college is working with the new administration at the high school to ease the transition of Payson students to college and increase the number of students taking advantage of what the college has to offer.
