Rim Country Children Head Back To Class

This seems to be a quiet week in Pine and Strawberry. The children are back in school and parents are taking a breather, or breathing a sigh of relief. Children get a little restless with too much free time. Hopefully it will be a good school year for all of them with interesting challenges and a broadening of their horizons.

Students interested in participating in any sports this school year need to get the sports physical. It will be given at 3 p.m., Monday, Aug. 4. This applies to students in grades five to eight. This is a change from the previously scheduled time, so be sure to discuss it with your students.

You have certainly noticed the crew working south of Pine cutting down the dead trees along highway 87. It is a welcome sight for all of us. The 5,000 to 6,000 letters sent from all of us caught Governor Janet Napolitano's attention and got her exploring ways to help us.

The work is part of the Regional Payson Area Project. The State Land Department put together the training of the inmates who are doing the work. The additional training they have received allows them to actually fell large trees. The result will be a badly needed firebreak around our communities -- eliminating a horrendous source of fuel for a wildfire. Once the dead trees are gone, our forest will once again be beautiful.

"If not for the letter writing campaign organized by Take Pride, we would not have these corrections crews working in our community now," Fire Chief Paul Coe of the Pine Strawberry Fire Department said.

For all who signed one of the letters, it is great to know that your signatures did make a difference.

The Pine Strawberry Take Pride group had a most successful silent auction Saturday evening at Cyds in Pine. There were wonderful and fun things to bid on including a trundle bed, fishing boat, ski boots and great art work. The turnout was terrific and everyone had a great time. Take Pride sincerely thanks all businesses and individuals who donated gift certificates, food and beverages, items for auction, trees and so much more. Also a thank you to all who helped and all who supported Take Pride with their purchases. Sandy, Cyd and the rest of the committee did a wonderful job. The proceeds will be put to good use throughout our communities.
