Diamond action will soon heat up the Payson recreation scene.
Town-sponsored girls fast-pitch, men's recreation, women's recreation, open (competitive) and T-ball leagues are among the offerings available to local athletes.
Registration for participation in the men's, women's, and open leagues ends at 5 p.m. today (Friday). The $275-per team registration fee may be paid at the Town's Parks and Recreation office located at Green Valley Park.
Play in the three leagues begins June 23 and continues throughout the summer.
The open league, which is designed for the more serious players, will feature games and doubleheaders on Thursday evenings only. Each open team is guaranteed 16 regular season games and at least three postseason tournament contests.
The men's and women's recreation league will feature games on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and --if necessary -- on Friday. Rec teams are guaranteed 14 regular season contests and a minimum of two tournament games.
According to Payson recreation sports coordinator Teddy Pettet, teams cannot enter both the open and recreation leagues. However, a recreation team can have up to five players from an open league team on its roster.
Men's rec league games will be played at Rumsey II and the high school field. Women's rec contests are at Rumsey I and Lady Longhorn field.
Girls fast-pitch softball in two age divisions, 14-years-and-under and 10-years-and-under, begins Monday. Games are scheduled for Monday through Thursday evenings throughout the summer at Rumsey III, the Rumsey North multipurpose field and Lady Longhorn diamond. Nine teams are participating in the 14-years-and-under division. Seven have entered the 10-years-and-under division.
T-ball, which also begins Monday, has 10 teams in the 5-years-and-under division. In the 7-years-and-under division, nine are entered.
