Three former Payson High School soccer standouts showcased their skills at the Arizona Coaches Association All-Star Soccer match May 31 at Casa Grande High School.
Travis Sanders, Andrew Karlowski and Ryan Peters participated on the Class 1A to 4A team that dropped a 6-4 decision to the Class 5A all-stars.
The three were chosen for the all-star game in a voting of coaches held at the conclusion of last season. All three graduated from PHS last month.
According to Payson High coach Roger Wholly, the former Longhorns performed well in the celestial face-off.
"Ryan scored the first goal for his team and then scored another," he said. "Andrew played really good defense and Travis played quite well in the midfield."
During the regular season, the efforts of the three helped Payson earn a tie for the 1A-3A fall state soccer championship.
The ACA all-star soccer game was originally to have been a clash pitting the 1A-3A fall league players against those representing the 1A-3A winter league. That format was particularly appealing in that the players did not compete against one another during the regular season.
The winner would have walked away with bragging rights of having played their senior seasons in the most competitive 1A-3A league
When coaches' plans for that type of format went astray, the small school players hooked up with the 4A all-stars to take on the 5A team.
Next season, when Payson moves from the 3A to the 4A conference, the soccer team will participate in a winter league. Since the inception of the team, Payson has competed in fall league play.
In the 4A Grand Canyon Region with Payson will be Mingus, Flagstaff, Coconino, Page and Sinagua.
