Pole Bending Turning Into Social Event

A better turnout of male competitors is all it would take for the Parks and Recreation-sponsored Buckle Series of pole bending and barrel racing to turn into an overwhelming success.

"Barrel racing and pole bending is open to everyone," event sponsor Charlene Hunt said. "I would encourage men, young and old, to come out."

Hunt also is urging those who opt not to compete, to turn out and enjoy the evening.

"Even if you are not a competitive racer, this type of event is an excellent outing for you and your horse to socialize," she said.

The second Buckle Series competition, June 11, featured a larger turnout than did the highly successful first.

"We had some new additions in all the age groups," Hunt said.

The "time only" runs were especially popular among the participants.

"The contestants are utilizing them as a training session in a competitive setting," Hunt said. "It helps a rider slow the horse down and work on the problem areas."

Buckle Series competitions will continue throughout the summer, at 7 p.m., June 18 and 25, and July 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. The books open at 6 p.m. and entry fee is $5 per participant for both barrels and pole bending. For those who opt to compete for time only, the fee is $3.

At the conclusion of the season, buckles will be given to the winner of both barrel racing and pole bending in each age group, Hunt said.

The custom buckles were made especially for the series by Yellowhair-designers in Taylor.

At series end, other awards will be given to second- through fifth-place winners.

For those who participate in all nine of the events, but do not place in the top five, Hunt will award consolation prizes.

Complete event rules are available at the Green Valley Park P&R offices.
