Teams from around the state visit the Rim country Independence Day to compete in the Payson July 4th Men's 35-Years-And-Over Soccer Tournament.
Joining the local Payson team in the shoot-out will be the Arsenal, Incinerators, Sand Dragons, Mirage and the Hard Rockers -- all Valley teams.
The Incinerators enter the tournament as three-time defending champions. In last year's gold-medal finale, the Incinerators defeated second place Mirage 2-0.
The Payson team -- fueled by the scoring of Arturo Panama and Efren Arguello -- turned in its best effort last year finishing third in the six-team field.
Payson won the bronze medal by virtue of a 3-0 victory over the X Team.
Over the course of the 2003 tournament to be played July 4, 5 and 6, 17 games will be played on the Rumsey North and Rumsey Library fields.
Action kicks off at 9:30 a.m., July 4, and continues until 9:15 p.m. The schedule will be repeated in July 5 play.
At 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, the playoff for third and fourth place will be held.
Immediately after, about 11 a.m., the championship will be decided.
In the tournament format, a winning team is awarded six points and a tie is worth three points. Also, each goal scored is worth one point up to a maximum of three points. One point is awarded a team that records a shut-out win.
At the end of the first two days of competition, the top four point producers are seeded into Sunday's final two rounds.
Payson is slated to play at 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Both games are on the Rumsey Library field.
On Sunday, Payson is slated for games at 11 a.m., 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. All are on the Rumsey North field.
