July 4 Celebration Begins With Barbecue

The Tonto Village parade will starts at 1 p.m., July 5, after a delicious barbecue beef, beans and coleslaw dinner by Ethel and Danny Cain of the Double D Restaurant. Serving will start at noon.

This year, for the lack of volunteers, the Tonto Village Fire District Auxiliary will not be sponsoring this event. The auxiliary however will be selling raffle tickets for a Sunbeam barbecue grill complete with all the necessary accessories. The cost will be $1 each or 6 for $5. The drawing will be held at the Labor Day fund-raiser Aug. 30 at 4 p.m.

The auxiliary also will sponsor the infamous "Chicken Drop‘ contest. All the monies collected will go into the Auxiliary funds to assist the Fire Department with necessary equipment through the coming year.

Danny's Quad Runners get together every Saturday morning about 8 a.m. and ride the trails in the surrounding area.

Two Saturdays ago, there were seven quads that took a 50-mile run behind Forest Lakes. If you would like to join this group, just show up, with your emergency equipment and plenty of water. No cigarettes are allowed on the trails.

I hope you caught one of the performances of the melodrama, "We Found Gold" that was held in Christopher Creek at the LDS Church this past weekend. Each performance was standing room only, and I heard very favorable comments by the people as they were leaving.

Everyone who was involved in any way deserves a big thank you from the entire cast and crew.

Look for the next performance next year in June. It should be another hit. The extraordinary Wanda West Palmer is already writing the script.

Pool shots

Everyone is now back on track; the men are back after being pampered and ready for some great bank shots.

This past Sunday, Cliff Landrum took top honors and Betty Koutz and JoAnn Kennedy came in second and third. This past Tuesday, the ladies took over the pool table and played nine-ball. Linda Stailey, Patty Boeschling and Candy Hart took the three top spots.

There is only one birthday to report this week.

Jack McDoniel, who is a longtime resident of Tonto Village celebrates his big day June 26th. Happy Birthday, Jack.

There was a birthday that I forgot this month, Vicki Grootegoed. She celebrated her big day June 12. Vicki also is part of our Ladies Domino group and was our prompter for the play last week. Sorry I missed it, Vicki.

The column last week got a little mixed up.

A paragraph concerning Danny's Quad runs was left out except for the last line of the paragraph. The sentence read ‘Bring along emergency equipment and plenty of water.' That sentence ended up at the bottom of the piece regarding the Tonto Village parade, so that it sounded as if we were expecting an extreme heat wave in Tonto Village on the day of the celebration on July 5th.

Let's hope that this is not the case and the weather will be perfect, and you will not have to bring any emergency equipment. Plenty of water is OK if you get thirsty.
