Payson High School mat star Zach Lee has been named to the All-Arizona Wrestling first team.
Lee was the only Class 3A athlete chosen to the all-star team -- a team that is traditionally dominated by athletes from 4A and 5A schools in Phoenix and Tucson.
A senior, Lee was named to the All-Arizona team in the 152-pound division he competed in all last season. During his stellar four-year career at PHS, Lee compiled a 151-10 record, was a three-time state champion and widely acknowledged as one of the finest wrestlers to come out of the storied Longhorn program.
Last week in Casa Grande, Lee participated in his final high school match as a member of the Arizona Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star team. Participating on the Red star squad, Lee chalked up a 16-3 major decision over Morenci's Chad Cordell. Cordell was chosen All-Arizona honorable mention.
Payson's Larry Wilbanks also was on the honorable mention list. A junior, Wilbanks lost only one match last season on his way to the 160-pound 3A state championship.
In somewhat of a surprise, Payson High's Nate Lee, Zach's younger brother, was not named to either the first, second or honorable mention All-Arizona teams.
A 171-pound sophomore, the younger Lee is a defending two-time state champion who is on track to become the Longhorn's first four-time state champion.
On the All-Arizona second team from the East region was 135-pound state champion Jeff Tenney (50-2) of Show Low.
From the Cougars on the honorable mention list were Sean Seymore and Jimmy Brookbank. Last month, Show Low edged runner-up Payson for the 3A state championship.
