An ABCD select drive best ball tournament highlighted the week for the members of the Payson Men's Golf Association.
Played April 24 at Payson Golf Course, the format allowed each team member to select the best tee shot of the foursome. From that lie, the contestants played out the hole.
"For a total score, the best two nets scores for each hole were tallied after 18 holes," PMGA member Bud Drummond said.
By carding a 97, the foursome of Dick Harding, John Peel, Victor Kostecki and Bob Hendrie won the tournament.
The second-place team of John Paule, Herb Sherman, Tim Ernst and George Frandsen finished with a 100. Ernst contributed heavily to the win with a pair of tee shots that finished as closest-to-the-pin prize money winners. On No. 8, Ernst swatted to within 3 feet, 4 inches of an ace. His tee shot on No. 5 that was 11 feet, 9 inches away from the flag also was a prize winner.
The third-place team of Mike Carter, Gary Vaplon, Bob Gardner and Hugh Templeton finished at 102.
Also winning closest-to-the-pin honors were John Calderwood (No. 2; 9 feet, 9 inches), John Pell (8 feet, 9 inches) and Tom Mallett (14 feet, 4 1/2 inches).
