Hilbert L. "Dutch" Hoffman, 79, a former resident of Payson, died Sunday, April 20, 2003. He was a current resident of New Philadelphia, Ohio. Mr. Hoffman was born April 25, 1923 to the late Leo and Anna M. Hauser Hoffman in Schnellville, Ind., the oldest of 11 children.
He married Evelyn B. Switzer Dec. 5, 1944.
During World War II, Mr. Hoffman served with the U.S. Army. He was an active member of Sacred Heart Church where he served as lector and taught CCD classes. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He worked for the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District, and retired after 15 years' service as chief civil engineer. After retirement, the Hoffmans owned a lapidary jewelry business. For several years, they lived in Arizona. They returned to New Philadelphia in 2002.
He enjoyed camping, spending time with family and friends, and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; daughters, Susan A. Strauss of New Philadelphia and Nancy L. (Donald) Guinn of Vancouver, Wash.; grandsons, A. J. Strauss and Lee (Margie) Strauss; great-granddaughter, Eviana Strauss; seven sisters; and one brother. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
A memorial Mass was held April 24 in Sacred Heart Church. Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery.
