The powerful Payson Longhorn boys track and field team has left little doubt it is the premier crew in Class 3A East region.
The proof in the pudding was the meet-leading 186 points the team posted at the East championships held May 9 and 10 at Blue Ridge High School in Lakeside.
Trailing the champion Longhorns in the final standings were Snowflake, 127.5; Show Low, 90; Alchesay, 81; Blue Ridge, 68; Estrella Foothills, 43; and Round Valley, 40.5.
With the East title firmly in grasp, the Longhorns now take their gold medal act to the state championship meet to be held May 16 and 17 at Queen Creek High School.
A victory there would represent the PHS boys first state title since 1990.
If the Longhorns are to stake claim to a championship, a huge obstacle the Rim team will have to overcome is the Sedona Red Rock Scorpions. At the West championships last week, Sedona easily ran away with the championship posting a whopping 177 points.
To outpoint Sedona and the other title contenders, the Horns will call upon five region individual champions for leadership and team points.
The East first place finishers include Lucas Schmidt, shot put, 47-10 1/2; Jake Swartwood, high jump, 6-4; Alex Cassuto, pole vault, 14; Tanner Morgan, 3200 meters, 10:46.81; and Joe Behrens, 800 meters, 2:03.344.
Although Longhorn hopes will hinge on the performance of the East champions at state, the team will also take to the 3A finals all of its athletes who finished among the top four at the regional meet.
Those who "outside qualified" by exceeding preset standards in their respective events will also compete at state.
Among the outside qualifiers in the 110-meter hurdles is Swartwood. The high-flying senior had to settle for a fifth place region finish, but his time of 15.353 exceeded the qualifying mark.
