Piestewa, Schum Honors Highlight Memorial Day


Honors for deceased U.S. Army PFC Lori Piestewa and former Payson Mayor Ray Schum will be among the highlights of Memorial Day services.

The Piestewa family will be presented with the medals the Private earned before her recent death in Iraq. Piestewa, a Hopi, is the first female Native American to die in combat.

Former Payson mayor and retired U.S. Marine Command Sgt. Maj. Ray Schum will be awarded the Distinguished Citizen Medal - Gold, as National Marine of the Year. Robert Canright, National Vice Commandant will make the presentation.

A missing man-formation flyover by the U.S. Air Force will be another highlight.

Speakers at the event include U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi, Col. Donald Taylor from Luke Air Force Base, and Arizona Rep. Jake Flake.

Other participants in the Memorial Day ceremony include the 80-student Rim Country Middle School Choir, the Payson Honor Choir, the Luke Air Force Base Honor Guard and the Payson Civil Air Patrol Cadets.

The Memorial Day observance is at 1 p.m. Monday, May 26 at the Green Valley Park Veterans Memorial.
