Payson has an opportunity to solidify its reputation as the flag capital of Arizona.
KTVK Channel 3 has told town officials that it plans to
send a news crew to Payson on Flag Day, Saturday, June 14, to capture a small town, patriotic celebration.
Lee Pretsch, unofficial town flag-waver, wants to make sure the town responds appropriately.
"We want to have flags all over town -- on every home and every business," Pretsch said.
"It's a wonderful opportunity for us, and we want to have a first-rate presentation."
To that end, Pretsch has called an emergency planning meeting for all service organizations and interested parties at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 21 in the conference room of the Parks and Recreation office at Green Valley Park.
"We have less than a month to work on this," Pretsch said. "We have to get going."
Besides painting the town red, white and blue, Pretsch plans to hold a ceremony at the Green Valley Park Veterans Memorial on Flag Day. So far, the schedule includes 100 Harley-Davidson bikers, each carrying a U.S. flag, will parade down a flag-festooned Main Street to the park.
Pretsch said an old-fashioned ice cream social is one of several ideas under consideration for the event. Additional ideas to make the day spectacular will be considered.
"It'll be exciting," Pretsch said. "I'm all fired up."
