Rim Country Memorial Day Ceremonies Will Honor War Dead

Veterans Tribute

Payson Womans Club and Rim Country Museum proudly present Payson Pioneer Cemetery Annual Memorial Day service, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., Monday, May 26, at the south gate of the cemetery.

Everyone is invited to attend this beautiful service honoring all men and women who have served our country. More than 175 flags will be placed on their graves.

There will be music, tributes, flag-raising and Taps.

Take time to walk among the wildflowers, view the graves of pioneers who settled Rim country and pay your respects to veterans.

All branches veterans memorial at Green Valley

At 1 p.m. Monday, May 26 there will be a Memorial Day ceremony honoring veterans from all branches of military service at the Payson Veterans Memorial in Green Valley Park at the west end of Main Street.

Guest speakers include Congressman Rick Renzi, Speaker of the House Jake Flake, and Colonel Donald E. Taylor, commander of the 56th medical group at Luke Air Force Base.

Former Mayor Ray Schum will receive a Marine Corps League award. A plane fly-over afterward will thrill everyone.

A member of the Lori Piestewa family also is expected to attend.

The Payson Veterans Memorial is a beautiful tribute to all Arizona veterans who served and gave their lives in World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf War.

The memorial includes benches and detailed three-dimensional engravings that commemorate each war. There are 2,885 names of Arizonans on the memorial. The list will be updated to include names of Arizonans lost in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Flag-raising

American Legion Tonto Rim Post #69 is having a Memorial Day flag-raising and ceremony at 11 a.m., Monday at 709 E. Highway 260. Mayor Ken Murphy will be the keynote speaker.

Messinger Memorial Day program

Messinger Mountain Meadows Memorial Park will present a Memorial Day service Monday at 11 a.m. The park is at 335 W. Round Valley Road.

The Luke Air Force Base Honor Guard will present colors, Eric Landau will play a patriotic medley on bag pipes and Gill Gifford will play Taps.

Refreshments will be provided. Service is free.
