Rim country residents paused to honor fallen veterans at several organized Memorial Day events Monday.
Four-year-old Merlyn York (pictured) looks at the flowers placed on the grave of a World War II veteran during a ceremony at Payson's Pioneer Cemetery. "I brought my children because I wanted them to know," said mom, Lisa York.
Eric Landau of Scottsdale shared his talent on the bagpipes during the town ceremony at the veterans memorial in Green Valley Park. Landau saluted the veterans with a medley of military service songs featuring tunes like "Anchors Away," "When the Caissons Go Rolling Along" and the "Marine Hymn."
The GVP event was organized by the Payson Flag Committee with help from local volunteers, and featured aircraft fly-overs from a military SMJ aircraft, planes from the Payson Pilots Association in the traditional missing-man formation, and a Black Hawk military helicopter from the Arizona National Guard.
