After almost three years of work, Rim country veterans now have a local address to visit for outpatient care.
"We are working to bring health care closer to our patients," said Paula Pedene, public affairs officer for Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center in Phoenix -- the base of operations for the new Payson VA Extension Clinic. "It had to be approved by Congress."
Dr. Mark Ivey will be the supervising physician of the Payson VA Extension Clinic at his Payson Family Care Association offices, 1106 N. Beeline Highway. While the clinic is an extension of Carl T. Hayden, it is contracted through HealthNet Federal Services, Pedene said.
Christina Shelly, a nurse practitioner, has joined the staff of Ivey's firm to help with new patients. "It is for primary health care, such as flu shots, check ups, renewing meds, that sort of thing," Pedene said, "Specialty care will still be handled at the hospital."
According to veteran Lawrence Okendo, to take advantage of this new health service, people who have not registered with the Veterans Administration must have all official documents, and any other document that pertains to medical records.
The clinic opened Nov. 3. Call (928) 472-3148 for more information.
