A 14-year-old boy allegedly sexually assaulted a 5-year-old boy in Mesa del last week. The suspect is the son of the victim's mother's boyfriend.
"The adults were watching TV and the mother went to check on the boys and caught them in the act," Gila County Sheriff's Detective Brian Havey said.
The victim's mother immediately called the sheriff's office.
"Officers from the sheriff's office responded and, while in route, made contact with the suspect vehicle which was just leaving the residence," Havey said. "In the vehicle was the 14-year-old suspect and his father."
The teen was taken to the sheriff's office and questioned.
"He, at first, denied he was involved," Havey said. "We, then, interviewed the 5-year-old victim and learned from him what had taken place."
The 14-year-old was interviewed a second time by officers.
"We brought the suspect back in with his father and re-interviewed him and eventually got the rest of the story," Havey said. "In the second interview, it became clear that he knew what he was doing."
Havey said this was not the first incident.
"We've established a history of four or five times since the school year started," he said. "We will be forwarding this to the County Attorney for prosecution."
Havey said the teenager was released into his father's custody.
