The Central Arizona Youth Football Association league champion Payson Raiders football team capped its undefeated (10-0) season with a 20-0 victory over the Chino Valley Trojans.
For the band of Payson players and an elated coach Dale Gonzales, "the shutout of the Trojans marked the finishing touch on a great season."
Throughout the gridiron campaign, the Raiders rolled over opponents as if the were legendary coach Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers rolling their way to the NFL championship.
Not until Chino Valley came to town on Saturday did the Raiders receive a stern test.
"We had our hands full with Chino Valley," Gonzales said.
At halftime, the two teams were locked in a scoreless deadlock.
Midway through the third quarter, the Raiders scored on a safety to take precarious 2-0 lead. Minutes later, quarterback B.J. Hill hooked up with Cody York for a Payson TD. Leading 8-0, Jarrett Trammel scampered into the end zone to up the count to 14-0. In the fourth stanza, York sealed the Trojans' fate with a 20-yard scoring pass to Hill.
"That put the nail in the coffin," Gonzales said.
Following the win, the coach cited the Raider defense for a spirited effort that continually thwarted the Chino Valley offense.
They never got closer than the 25-yard line," Gonzales said.
