Ken Murphy, mayor of Payson, has announced plans to seek re-election.
Unbowed by a string of controversies and court appearances in 2002 and 2003, Murphy, in an interview with local radio station KMOG, said he made the decision to seek re-election in response to the demands of his constituents and supporters.
"I know there is a group of people out there who don't want me to succeed," Murphy said in an earlier interview.
But Murphy believes in his nearly 10 years on the council he has contributed much to making Payson a better community.
Murphy served as a member of the town council for eight years. He won the office of mayor in the 2002 election. He has been a resident of the community for nearly 20 years.
When seeking election as mayor in 2002, Murphy said he saw the job as a way to continue to give back to the community.
The primary for the mayor and three town council offices is March 9. The general election is May 18.
The town will be using the mail-in ballot format for the 2004 election.
