In only its second year of existence, the Payson Sidewinders youth baseball team played its way to the championship of the 35-team Valley Youth league.
On the way to the title, the team compiled a 16-2 record in regular season. In the final tournament, the team finished with a 4-0 mark.
The teams were made up of players 10- to-12 years-old mostly from the communities of Fountain Hills, Scottsdale and Ahwautkee. The tournament was Nov. 13 through 15.
According to Sidewinder manager Geoff Wolf, the experience of playing fall ball should improve the players' skills for Payson League action when it tips off in the spring. The coaches of the team were Jimmy Aguilar, Sean Sloan and Joe Dougherty.
Last year, in the Sidewinders inaugural season, the team finished with a .500 record.
